Helmet Lights and Maintaining Your Bike

Like any other lighting system, a system mounted on your helmet helps you to distinguish yourself to other motorists and cyclists. It also allows you to see obstacles that may be in your path and increases the safety of your ride. Another way to ensure that you are going to have a safe ride is to be sure that you are cycling on a well maintained bicycle. This is especially important when cycling at night, because the dark will impede any attempts to repair your bike should an accident occur. Inspecting your bike and completing the following procedures every time you ride could help prevent accidents from occurring.

Check Tire Pressure
Keeping your tires properly aired will extend their life exponentially. When the tires are aired correctly there will be less weight and wear on the tire. If your tires seem low on air, add some oxygen before you begin your ride.

Check Tire Tread
If you park your bike in a garage or outside this procedure is especially important. Check your tire tread and make sure that there is no debris in the tread before you begin your ride. Debris could lead to puncture as soon as you add your weight to the bike which results in the entire tire having to be replaced.

Spin Wheels
I know you are wondering, "Why would I spin my wheels before riding my bike?" Well, the simple answer is that spinning your wheels will show any wobbles that could indicate your tires are misaligned. Not immediately fixing this problem could severely damage your bike, even resulting in purchasing an entire new wheel.

Check Your Brakes!
Making sure that your brakes are correctly working is the most important part of your pre-ride ritual. By pumping the brakes and making sure that the brake pads touch the wheel rims you can assure yourself that your brakes are working properly.

Check Your Chain
Make sure that your chain is properly placed and well lubricated. If your chain is catching or making noise, that may be an indication that it needs to be lubricated. Failing to lubricate your chain could result in it popping off or breaking during your ride.

Make Sure You Have Spares
When biking it is a safe procedure to carry an extra tire tube, pump, and other tools with you. This ensures that if an accident does occur you have the tools to correct the problem. All of these supplies can easily fit in any backpack with your water bottle and other cycling supplies.
