The Lowdown on LED Lights
The Advantages
One of the most beneficial components of an LED light bulb is that they produce much more light per watt than regular incandescent light bulbs. This means that if you are running your bicycle lights with a battery operated system you are going to get more light for a longer period of time with an LED lightbulb than with any other bulb. Another benefit of LED lights when being used in conjunction with a bicycle is that, unlike other light bulbs, LED lights focus their light. This means that your lighting system won't need reflectors to properly position the illumination. Have you ever crashed and burned on your bicycle? I bet you have, because most people do at some point in their life. If you are especially clumsy, then LED lights may be for you, because unlike other light bulbs, these don't break when they hit the ground. That's not to say that these light bulbs are unbreakable, they are just a bit hardier than traditional light bulbs. Another feature of LED light bulbs that could be seen as an advantage or disadvantage is the way that they run out of power. Unlike traditional bulbs which shut off and won't turn back on, the LED bulbs dim slowly over time before they go out for good. If you keep an eye on your bulb this shouldn't be a big deal, but if you don't pay attention then you may not be getting the best illumination available.
The Disadvantages
While there are many more advantages to using LED light bulbs than disadvantages, those pesky put offs are still out there. One of the main complaints with LED light bulbs is the cost. These light bulbs are more expensive than traditional light bulbs due to the more advanced power supplies needed to run them. If you live in a climate where the temperature is always changing, then LED light bulbs may not be the best choice for you. In areas where the temperature fluctuates it has been observed that LED light bulbs don't last as long as normal. You must also keep in mind that when using a LED light bulb it must be supplied with the correct voltage. This may mean purchasing extra supplies to keep the light bulb running.
Where Have I Seen LED Light Bulbs?
LED light bulbs are gaining popularity and can be seen in many everyday applications. Things like traffic lights, exit signs, and railroad crossings all use LED light bulbs. Other applications include: flashlights, remote controls, and even Christmas lights!
